Sky’s standalone streaming puck, ‘Sky Stream’, marked a big shift for the TV company. One of the box’s prominent features is its ability to stream Freeview channels (as well as Sky’s premium channels) without an aerial or a satellite dish.
Instead, Sky Stream relies on broadband to deliver streaming services and channels to your set-top box.
That’s a significant change for Sky, along with the ability to get Sky Stream without a long-term contract, for £29/month (or £26/m if you DO sign an 18-month contract), along with optional paid add-ons.
Sky Stream shares a lot with its big brother, Sky Glass – the streaming TV that Sky launched last year – including the list of available channels and apps, and the way it records some content to the cloud.
While the list of apps is not as comprehensive as dedicated streaming devices (like the Fire TV or Roku), most of the major UK streaming services are there (but not all).
The same can be said about the selection of Freeview channels – most of the major ones are available, but some, including a few popular channels like SportyStuff TV, That’s TV and the NOW music channels – are still missing.
Sky Stream’s Streaming Apps
Since its launch, Sky has added several additional streaming apps to Stream that weren’t there in the beginning.
However, note that some content partners won’t show up as “apps”, but instead require a direct subscription via Sky – BT Sport is one such example.
And, just because an app is available, doesn’t mean its service is part of your Sky subscription – you will still have to sign up and pay for premium 3rd party services like Amazon’s Prime Video, Disney+ and the rest.
Here’s the full list of Sky Stream apps, as of this writing:
BBC iPlayer – The catch-up and streaming app from the BBC, with thousands of back-catalogue programmes, and the ability to stream live channels.
ITVX – The catch-up and box-sets streaming app from ITV, with thousands of shows and films, including many exclusive productions.
Channel 4 (Previously All4) – The catch-up and streaming app from Channel 4, where you can watch live streaming of the channels, as well as thousands of box-sets from the past.
My5: Channel 5’s streaming and catch-up app was curiously missing from Stream for a long time – but it was finally added in 2023.
STV Player – The on-demand video streaming service of the popular Scottish broadcaster, with box-sets and exclusive programmes.
Netflix – Netflix needs no introductions at this point. Sky Stream’s “default” package already includes the basic tier of Netflix, which is good for one screen at a time, and SD video quality (but you can upgrade to HD or 4K).
Amazon’s Prime Video – Amazon’s streaming video service, with programmes and films (see our Prime Video review). Most of the content requires a paid Prime Video membership (you can get a 30-day free trial).
Prime Video also offers many Prime Video Channels, which is a way to get some channels that are otherwise missing from Sky.
Disney+ – The popular streaming subscription service from Disney, with content from the worlds of Disney, Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars and National Geographic, as well as more “mature” content in its Star category (see our Disney+ review).
Paramount+ – The streaming service with TV programmes and films from CBS, Showtime and Paramount. Sky Cinema subscribers (on Sky Q, Sky Stream and Sky Glass) get Paramount+ for free.
Apple TV+ – Apple’s subscription streaming service had a rocky start, but now includes plenty of critically acclaimed programmes such as Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, Severance and more.
Discovery+ – The streaming service that replaced Discovery’s Dplay (which was totally free), with a combined offering of both free and “premium”channels. Sky Stream (as well as Sky Q and Sky Glass) customers can currently get Discovery+ at no extra cost.
YouTube – Google’s massive video site.
LIONSGATE+ – A subscription-based localised streaming-only version of the US premium channel Starz, with premium TV shows and films.
YouTube Kids – The curated child-focused version of YouTube, that only holds age-appropriate content.
Spotify – The popular music streaming service, with more than 60 million songs – there’s a free tier (with adverts), and a Premium paid tier.
Amazon Music – Amazon’s music streaming service, with more than 60 million songs.
BBC Sounds – The BBC radio app, which includes both live versions of BBC’s radio channels, as well as a rich library of podcasts and radio dramas.
RadioPlayer – Stream live radio stations.
Global Player – Capital Radio’s streaming app, with live radio stations and thousands of podcasts.
XITE – A free music videos app that offers a “personalised video experience”, where you can build playlists catered to you.
Vevo – The ultimate place to watch official music videos and live performances – with some being exclusive to the service.
Peloton – A subscription-based workout and fitness app, where you can watch (and take part in) studio-style workouts.
PlayWorks – Games that you can play directly on your TV screen, by using the Sky Stream remote. The games include classics like Tetris, Solitaire and Mah Jongg, as well as mobile hits like Doodle Jump and Crossy Road.
Sky Kids Games – Native games for Sky Stream, which you can play with your remote.
GolfPass – A subscription-based service that brings you golf tuition from the world’s best players and coaches as well as exclusive shows, Golf Channel films, programming, original content and live feeds.
Highbrow – a children’s subscription video-on-demand service with educational videos.
Some of the major apps/services that are still missing from Sky Stream (and Sky Glass) include Pluto TV, Twitch, The Roku Channel, Plex (the popular personal media streamer) and more.
Sky Stream: Freeview And Sky Channels
As with Sky Glass, Stream uses broadband to deliver Freeview, Sky and other premium TV channels to your device.
Linear channels are accessed via the device’s Electronic Programme’s Guide (similar to how it works on Sky Q or a Freeview device) – but instead of coming to you via an aerial or a satellite dish – all channels are streamed to you via broadband.
Also remember that some of these channels (like Sky Cinema, Kids and Sports) require an extra subscription on top of Sky Stream’s basic £26-£29/month package.

I pay 79 a month for sky nothing special one extra in my bedroom that it .no movie channel apart from netflix .prime which I pay for that .so wonder how much it will cost for the same what I have and a box upstairs. Every time I ring .and ask them ti drop the bill .there don’t. So I will be ringing them in tge morning

The Christian channels have disappeared, is Sky going to bring them to Sky Stream
Have Sky corrected all the problems that I experienced with the long returned Sky Glass TV? The picture freezing, the shutting down, the out of sync sound to name but a few. I returned my TV back in January yet people are still posting the same faults. Have Sky corrected all the faults or are we being sold a faulty product again?

Hi Craig I did the same when I got sky glass but they cancelled my Q for free because I was staying with sky with no change over problems, if you want glass or stream they should do it for you with no problems, worth a call to find out. Hope this helps
