Starting today, thanks to a new long-term partnership between Sky and Amazon, customers of both companies will be able to enjoy each other’s apps – with NOW TV coming to some Fire TV devices (but not all – see ahead), and Prime Video becoming available on Sky Q and the NOW TV stick.
For years, NOW TV stood out as one of the last major streaming services missing from Amazon’s Fire TV devices, while Prime Video was missing from NOW TV’s streaming stick, and from Sky Q.
This put the Roku streaming devices at the top of the pack, having almost all the major UK streaming services, including NOW TV. Now, however, Fire TV is catching up – and gaining ground, since the Firesticks also have a BritBox app, which Roku is lacking.
NOW TV is Sky’s answer to Netflix and Amazon Prime Video – for a cheap monthly price, and no contracts, you can get access to a library of movies (with the £11.99/month Cinema Pass), the latest TV programmes and box-sets (with the £9.99/month Entertainment Pass), live sports (£33.99/month) and programmes for kids (£3.99/month).
To watch NOW TV, you need either a third-party streamer (like the Fire TV, starting today), a supported Smart TV, or one of NOW TV’s own streaming devices.
Prime Video is Amazon’s streaming video service, which offers a large library of shows, Premier League matches and popular original productions, such as The Boys, The Grand Tour, Jack Ryan and more.
It costs £5.99/month (or £79/year if you get the full Amazon Prime membership), though you can also get a 30-days free trial.
Two years ago, in a similar partnership, NOW TV and Sky added the Netflix app to the NOW TV stick and Sky Q. Now, it’s Amazon Prime Video’s turn.
The new partnership also means that sports fans will be able to get ALL the major sports and Premier League streaming services – Sky Sports, BT Sports and Prime Video’s live matches – on just one device, either the Fire TV, the NOW TV stick or Sky Q (Of course, you would also need to subscribe to each service, as before). Up until now, this was only possible on Roku devices (and some Smart TVs).
How To Watch NOW TV On A Firestick
The roll-out of the NOW TV app to Amazon Fire TV devices is starting today in the UK, but not all devices will be supported from the start.
The first Firesticks to get NOW TV support are:
- The Fire TV 4K Stick
- The Amazon Fire TV Stick (HD, 3rd Generation)
- The Amazon Fire TV Stick Lite
- The Fire TV Stick (HD, 2nd Gen)
The rest of the Fire TV devices (such as the Fire TV cube and older models) will get the NOW TV app in “early 2021”.
If your device is supported, you just need to go to the Fire TV app store on your stick, and download the NOW TV app. From there, you can either sign in or register for a new account (which you can also do here, with a 7-day free trial).
How To Watch Prime Video On NOW TV Devies
If you have the NOW TV Smart Stick, starting today the Prime Video app will be automatically installed (and pre-installed on new devices). We’re told it should also work on the older, “Black Box” NOW TV streamers.
Once you have the Prime Video app installed, you can either sign in with your existing account – or sign up for a new one.
How To Watch Prime Video On Sky Q
Sky Q customers (see Sky bundles here) will be able to find Prime Video by saying “Launch Prime Video” into their voice remote, to pair their Sky Q box with their existing Prime membership or their standalone Prime Video subscription.
It’ll also be available in the Apps rail, and some Amazon Originals will feature on the Sky Q Home page alongside the best from Sky, Netflix and Disney+.
A deeper Sky Q and Prime Video integration, which will include voice search for Prime’s TV series and movies, will be coming in 2021.
