Goodbye IMDb TV, Hello… Freevee. Yes, Amazon’s free (with adverts) streaming service, which launched in the UK late last year, is getting a facelift and a new name starting on April 27.

Along with the new branding, Amazon has announced it will grow IMDb TV Freevee’s Originals slate by 70% in 2022, including the Bosch spinoff  Bosch: Legacy and a brand new romantic comedy, Love Accidentally, starring Brenda Song and Aaron O’Connell.

Amazon also announced that following its successful launch in the UK, Freevee will continue its international expansion with a launch in Germany later this year.

IMDb TV started its life as a US-only service, back in 2019, under the umbrella of the big film database, IMDb – which is owned by Amazon.

The service features licensed content from a variety of studios and production companies, as well as original productions. Everything is free to watch – but with advert breaks.

When it first launched in the UK, the service only included on-demand content, but “live” ad-supported linear channels were soon added, with themed categories such as sci-fi, action and horror (but those channels are only available on the Fire TV app-based version of the service).

Unlike many other ad-supported free streaming services, IMDb TV featured at launch quite a lot of “premium” titles, such as Babylon 5 (the remastered version), The A-Team, Community, the original reboot Leverage: Redemption and fan-favourite classics such as Pulp FictionLife is Beautiful and Cloverfield.

In 2022, Freevee (get used to the new name) will add several new original shows to its roster:

  • A new home-design series, Hollywood Houselift with Jeff Lewis.
  • Greg Garcia’s comedy series Sprung.
  • High School, a scripted series adapted for television by Clea DuVall, produced by Plan B, and based on the New York Times best-selling memoir by Grammy-nominated, platinum recording artists Tegan and Sara Quin.
  • Bosch: Legacy, The spinoff of the longest-running Original series for Prime Video.

Additionally, the free streaming service will add exclusive Original movies to its slate, starting with a greenlight order for the workplace rom-com Love Accidentally.

In Love Accidentally, Alexa (Brenda Song) and Jason (Aaron O’Connell) are competing for a promotion at their advertising firm when each of their significant others breaks up with them.

Thinking she has texted a friend, Alexa mistakenly sends Jason a broken-hearted message. The two spark up an anonymous relationship via text with neither aware of who the other really is. When the truth comes out, will they be able to put their rivalry aside and let true love prevail?

“Customers are increasingly shifting to streaming ad-supported premium content, and we have developed Amazon Freevee to deliver them highly sought content with limited ads”, said Ashraf Alkarmi, director of Amazon Freevee.

“Our new name clearly communicates who we are: An easy-to-navigate streaming service, available to users for free, whenever and wherever they choose to watch some of the greatest Original and licensed content available.”

How Can I Watch Freevee (Formerly IMDb TV) In The UK?

The streaming service is available to watch in one of two ways:

On the Prime Video app: As a free Prime Video channel. Prime Video channels are accessible either directly on a computer browser, or with all versions of the Prime Video app, which are available on almost every streaming device â€“ Fire TV, Roku, Google Chromecast and most Smart TVs.

However, unlike most other Prime Video channels, IMDb TV / Freevee doesn’t require an Amazon Prime subscription – though you do need to have a (free) Amazon account.

The Fire TV App: The app is only available on Amazon’s Fire TV devices, such as the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max. You can install it directly on your device, or via this link.

In the US, the current IMDb TV standalone app is also available on Android and iOS devices – but those haven’t been announced in the UK, as of this writing.

  1. Prime Video is awful for subtitles for the hard of hearing. Hopefully, this service might be better. It couldn’t be worse, could it?

  2. Hopefully it improves as it’s the worst service on Firestick by a mile. Always breaking down. If not that the movies were out of sync.
