Just a month after IMDb TV, the Premium American streaming service, finally launched in the UK – and it’s adding 15 free linear channels to its roster. Furthermore, a standalone IMDb app is now available for Amazon’s Fire TV devices.
The new “live” channels are all free to watch (with adverts), and cover topics such as food, home improvement, true crime and more (see the full list below).
These linear channels are being added to IMDb TV’s on-demand content library, which includes TV classics, films and several IMDb originals, such as Leverage: Redemption and Alex Rider.
IMDb TV started as a US-only service, back in 2019, under the umbrella of the big film database, IMDb – which is owned by Amazon.
The service features licensed content from a variety of studios and production companies, as well as original productions. Everything is free to watch – but with advert breaks.
At launch, IMDb TV’s on-demand content was only available via Amazon’s Prime Video app, as a Prime Video Channel.
Prime Video channels are accessible either directly on computer browsers, or with the Prime Video app, which is available on almost every streaming device – Fire TV, Roku, Google Chromecast and most Smart TVs.
This week, however, a standalone app for the service has been announced.
IMDb TV’s Fire TV App
The new Fire TV app was already available for a while in the US, and has now been opened up to UK viewers.
Unlike the Prime Video experience, the IMDb TV app gives users a way to focus only on the content that’s available on IMDb TV.
Furthermore, the dedicated app opens up a range of live linear channels, that mimics the live TV experience.
Some of the content shown on these “live” channels is also available on-demand, but it caters to people who like the old-school style of switching between channels and programmes.
For now, the app is only available for Amazon’s Fire TV devices, such as the new Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max. You can install it directly on your device, or via this link.
In the US, the IMDb TV standalone app is also available on Android and iOS devices – but we don’t know yet whether these versions will make their way to our side of the pond.
IMDb TV’s New Live Channels
In addition to the on-demand content, IMDb TV is joining a growing list of streaming services that provide free linear channels – such as Plex Channels, Pluto TV and others.
Accessed via the new standalone Fire TV app, the channels include categories such as sci-fi, action and horror – as well as the newly launched live channels. Some revolve around a theme – and some simply air loops of a specific series.
