StarzPlay Launches Standalone Streaming App In The UK

Starz, the popular American premium TV network, is expanding its streaming TV service in the UK and several other countries: while up until now, the service (“StarzPlay”) was only available via Amazon Prime Video or Apple TV, it will now be available as a standalone app and subscription service.

Back in 2018, StarzPlay launched in the UK as an Amazon Prime Video addon channel. The channel, which was only available to Amazon Prime members, costs £7.99/month (in addition to your Prime subscription).

Later, StarzPlay was also added to AppleTV, again as a paid addon. And now – StarzPlay is available on Android and iOS devices as a standalone app.

In the US, Starz is responsible for several successful shows, such as Outlander, Counterpart, The White Queen and Mr.Mercedes.

In the UK, with rights being sold to different companies (Outlander is on Amazon Prime Video in the UK, for example), the selection on StarzPlay is a bit different.

Counterpart Starzplay

So in the UK, you get movies, as well as TV shows – from newer ones like Pennyworth (which tells the story of Bruce Wayne’s legendary butler – Alfred) and Counterpart (which was cancelled, unfortunately) to shows like The White Queen and Castle Rock.

How To Get StarzPlay In The UK

The new StarzPlay app is now available on Android and iOS devices.

Once you download it, you can get a free 7-days trial, after which you will pay the monthly subscription price, which is currently £4.99/month (so cheaper than the Amazon Prime Video price).

If you subscribe via the standalone app, you will then be able to watch StarzPlay TV shows and movies on:

  • Android Phones/Tablets
  • Android TV Devices
  • iOS Phones/Tablets
  • Desktop Computers (via your browser).

Interestingly, the standalone app isn’t available on the Fire TV AppStore for now – maybe as a way to push you towards the Prime Video StarzPlay subscription instead.

If you still want to watch on an Amazon Fire TV device, they’re currently running a Cyber Month promotion – with the free trial extended to 30 days, instead of the usual 7.
