One of the highest-grossing video game films of all time, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, is now available to watch on TV via digital streaming in the UK, less than three months after its release in local cinemas.
The film came to VOD stores in the UK, for digital streaming, on June 15, 2022.
The film was released in UK cinemas on April 1, 2022. Therefore, its streaming release is just 75 days after its theatrical release – which is not as early as some, but still not as long a wait as past films.
In the US, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is already available to stream on streaming service Paramount+, where it’s available to watch at no extra cost for subscribers – but Paramount+ is only coming to the UK on June 22, and we don’t know if and when Sonic 2 will be added to the UK version of Paramount+.
The physical editions of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – DVD and Bluray – are already available for pre-order, with the expected release date being August 8, 2022.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2, directed by Jeff Fowler, is a sequel to the popular first film from 2020.
The film stars Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell and Jim Carrey returning.
New cast additions this time around include Shemar Moore, Idris Elba as the voice of Knuckles and Colleen O’Shaughnessey as the voice of Tails.
The film is based on the popular SEGA video game series, and did very well both with critics and the crowds. It became the highest-grossing video game film in the US, and did very at the UK box office as well.
A third Sonic film is already in development.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sees the return of the world’s favourite blue hedgehog for a next-level adventure. After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero.
His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations.
Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.
How To Watch Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Online In The UK
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has been available to purchase and digitally stream in the UK from June 15, 2022.
It is available on Rakuten TV, Amazon’s Prime Video store, Apple’s iTunes, and other streaming video stores. You can then use a streaming device to watch the film on your telly.
As of this writing, the purchase price is £13.99. This is not a Premium Rental – instead, the film is available as a digital purchase, which you buy and then own digitally.
At its initial price point, it’s similar to the cost of past premium rentals, such as No Time To Die and Dune (which were £15.99), but there’s a major difference – a premium rental is only available to watch for 48 hours, while a digital purchase lets you own the film forever.
At a later date (usually a few weeks after the initial release) the film will also become available as a lower-cost digital rental.
More than two months after the film’s theatrical release (in the UK), Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s digital release is later than what we’ve grown accustomed to in recent months.
However, it is still earlier than films of the past, when it used to take several months before films transferred from movie theatres to home entertainment.
Once Paramount+ launches in the UK (on June 22), there’s a possibility the film will become available to stream on it at no extra cost – but we don’t have official confirmation yet, and it will most likely not be available at launch.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 DVD And Blu-ray
The physical editions of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – DVD, Bluray and 4K Bluray – are already available to pre-order as well, with an official release date of August 8, 2022.
Fans purchasing the Digital, 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will find they are packed with nearly an hour of bonus features, headlined by an all-new, exclusive animated short entitled “Sonic Drone Home” featuring Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles.
