ITVX Disney+ Deal Goes Live: Premium Shows Now Free

Shortly after Disney+ and ITVX announced their groundbreaking content-sharing deal, subscribers can now actually watch the premium programmes on both platforms.

As of this week, Disney+ hits like Andor and Futurama are streaming free on ITVX, while ITV’s biggest successes – including the award-winning Mr Bates vs The Post Office – have landed in Disney+ libraries (see the full list below).

Quick Recap: What This Deal Actually Is

In a surprising twist for UK viewers, Disney+ and ITVX have taken an unusual step – by sharing content with each other, as we reported earlier this month.

The first-of-its-kind partnership introduces a “Taste of ITVX” section to Disney+ and a “Taste of Disney+” collection to ITVX.

What makes this unique is Disney letting its premium shows appear on a free platform. We’re talking about shows that Disney normally uses as key selling points to get people to subscribe – such as Andor, The Bear and more.

Meanwhile, ITVX gets to showcase its biggest hits to Disney’s subscriber base.

Both platforms refresh their selections regularly, so you’ll get a changing sample of what each service has to offer.

It’s also worth noting that Disney+ also has some BBC shows in its roster.

A Quick Primer on Both Services

ITVX is ITV’s streaming service that replaced the old ITV Hub back in December 2022. Unlike its predecessor, which was mainly just catch-up TV, ITVX is a proper streaming destination with original content and a growing library.

The service is available on most streaming devices and Smart TVs sold in the UK, as well as on Virgin Media’s TV boxes, Sky Glass, Sky Stream and Sky Q.

The free tier is – well – free, but with adverts, and the ITVX Premium tier (£5.99/month) lets you watch without adverts, and adds the BritBox library to the mix.

Disney+, meanwhile, has transformed significantly since its UK launch in March 2020, when it was a bargain at just £5.99 per month.

The service has branched out well beyond its traditional content library of Marvel, Star Wars and Disney classics, and has even gone into live sports – just a couple of months ago, they secured exclusive UK rights to the UEFA Women’s Champions League for the next five seasons.

Disney+ offers three subscription tiers:

  • Standard with Ads: £4.99/month
  • Standard: £8.99/month
  • Premium (with 4K): £12.99/month

The Real Winner Here

Here’s the thing – if you look at who’s getting the better deal, it’s pretty clearly ITVX viewers.

They’re gaining access to premium content that normally requires a Disney+ subscription, while Disney+ subscribers are getting shows that are already available for free on ITVX anyway.

That said, there is one genuine upside for Disney+ subscribers: if you’re already paying for Disney+ Standard (£8.99/month) or Premium (£12.99/month), you can watch these ITVX shows without adverts.

On ITVX’s free tier, you’d have to sit through ad breaks, or pay £5.99/month for ITVX Premium to remove them.

However, if you’re on Disney+ Standard with Ads (£4.99/month), you’ll still see the adverts during ITVX content, so there’s no advantage there – other than not having to load a different app.

For ITV, it’s about getting their content in front of Disney+ subscribers who might not have bothered downloading the ITVX app. Shows like Mr Bates vs The Post Office generated enormous buzz last year, and this gives them another platform to showcase that kind of quality programming.

  1. “However, if you’re on Disney+ Standard with Ads (£4.99/month), you’ll still see the adverts during ITVX content, so there’s no advantage there – other than not having to load a different app.”

I think “Disney+ Standard with Ads” shows fewer adverts than ad supported ITVX so that would be and advantage of watching the ITVX shows on the Disney ad tier.
