Sky Stream And Glass Finally Get Premier Sports

Sky Glass and Stream users have been waiting over a year for this moment, and it’s finally here: Premier Sports launched its app on both platforms today, ending one of the most annoying gaps in Sky’s newer streaming services.

If you’ve got a Glass or Stream box and have been enviously watching Sky Q users enjoy their LaLiga matches, your wait is over – The Premier Sports app is finally here (or rather – is coming. Personally I’ve already seen it on my Sky Glass, but not Sky Stream – so the rollout may be happening in stages).

What You Get With the App

The new Premier Sports Sky Glass / Stream app includes the full package – that means Premier Sports 1 and 2, the dedicated LALIGATV channel, and their newer Premier Sports Rugby channel that runs rugby content around the clock.

Furthermore, there are additional event channels built into the app. These show live sports that you won’t find on the main broadcasts – basically extra coverage without paying extra.

The on-demand catalogue is comprehensive too. You can watch full match replays if you missed something important, or stick to quick highlights packages in three or ten-minute formats.

Beyond the live content, you’ll also find on-demand magazine shows, previews, and post-match analysis to keep you busy between games.

What’s Actually On

Premier Sports has built up a decent collection since they got their name back. Scottish football fans get over 80 matches – Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup, and the Premier Sports Cup.

LaLiga is probably what most people want – every match from Spain’s top division. Real Madrid, Barcelona, the lot. Then there’s European stuff like Copa del Rey and Coppa Italia, plus comprehensive rugby coverage from the Investec Champions Cup, EPCR Challenge Cup, and United Rugby Championship.

They’ve also branched into ice hockey with 15 NHL games each week, plus motorsport coverage including NASCAR and Speedway.

Chuck in some IIHF World Championships, and you’ve got a fair spread across different sports.

The Viaplay Saga Explained

For those who might be wondering how we got here, Premier Sports has had quite the journey. The broadcaster started in 2009 under Michael O’Rourke, operating successfully with a solid portfolio of sports rights across the UK and Ireland.

Things took an interesting turn in 2022 when Nordic entertainment company Viaplay acquired Premier Sports as part of their ambitious expansion into the UK market.

The acquisition saw everything rebranded as Viaplay Sports, with promises of combining live sports with original Scandinavian content.

Unfortunately, Viaplay’s UK venture didn’t last long. The company faced significant financial difficulties and decided the UK market wasn’t worth the hassle, choosing to exit entirely and refocus on their Nordic operations.

This led to Premier Sports buying back their own UK business in April 2024 – a proper homecoming story.

Since then, the app has been available on several platforms – such as streaming devices like Amazon’s Fire TV, as well as Virgin Media and Sky Q. But it was absent from Sky Glass and Stream – until today.

Prices Have Gone Up

Here’s the bit you won’t love – Premier Sports costs more now than when they relaunched last year. Back in April 2024, you could get in for £9.99 a month on an annual deal or £14.99 rolling monthly.

Now it’s £11.99/month minimum (if you sign up for a year), £15.99 for monthly flexibility, or £99 if you pay for the whole year upfront (normally it’s £120, but they’re running a ‘spring deal’ at the moment).

Note that since this is basically a 3rd party streaming service, you can’t sign up directly through Sky – you need to sync the Sky Glass / Stream app with your online Premier Sports account – and sign up through them.

Your subscription will then work on any supported streaming device, not just Sky’s.

Do note however that Premier Sports also has an Amazon Prime Video Channel version (which then works on any device that supports the Prime Video app) – but if you subscribe to the Prime Video version, you will NOT be able to watch the service on any OTHER app, as the two subscriptions are separate.

Why This Actually Matters

This has been genuinely irritating for Glass and Stream users. You buy into Sky’s fancy new hardware, then discover you can’t actually watch half the sports content that regular Sky Q boxes get. It’s taken far too long to sort out.

The timing works well, though – European Rugby Finals are coming, plus the Scottish Cup Final on Saturday. If you’re into either, you’ll want to get signed up quickly.
