MGM+, the rebranded version of Amazon’s MGM Prime Video Channel, has officially launched in the UK today.
In addition to content from MGM’s libraries, the new MGM+ streaming platform now includes a selection of TV shows from the recently closed Lionsgate+ streaming service.
This is good news for fans or popular franchises such as Outlander and Power Book, who feared their favourite shows would disappear with the demise of Lionsgate+ in the UK.
Lionsgate+, previously known as StarzPlay, had a challenging journey in the UK market. Despite offering a curated selection of acclaimed series and films, the service struggled to compete against established streaming giants.
In November 2023, Lionsgate announced it would shutter its UK operations as part of a larger restructuring effort.
Initially set to close on February 29, 2024, Lionsgate+ received a temporary reprieve, remaining available through Prime Video Channels for an additional period – until that was shut down as well.
In April, however, Amazon announced that its MGM Prime Video channel would become MGM+, while also picking up many of Lionsgate+’s former shows.
Today (Monday) – the renewed channel officially launched in the UK.
The service, a rebranded version of Amazon’s long-running MGM Prime Video Channel, holds films and TV shows from the vast MGM archives – and now also includes a range of popular series from Lionsgate, including the complete Outlander franchise, The Great, The Serpent Queen, P-Valley, and Hightown.
Among the most exciting additions to MGM+’s lineup are the new seasons of Power Book III: Raising Kanan and BMF, both available on the platform from day one.
Set in the early 1990s, Raising Kanan serves as a prequel to the original Power franchise, following the coming-of-age story of Kanan Stark. Season three promises to challenge the identity of every member of the Thomas family as they face existential crises.
Similarly, BMF, inspired by the true story of brothers Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory and Terry “Southwest T” Flenory, returns for a third season. As Meech moves to Atlanta to expand their drug empire, Terry holds down the fort in Detroit, facing formidable rivals both old and new.
MGM+ also boasts the complete collection of the epic historical drama Outlander, spanning seven seasons.
The series follows the story of Claire Randall, a World War II nurse who is mysteriously transported back in time to 1743 Scotland, where she becomes entangled in a passionate relationship with the young warrior Jamie Fraser.
For fans of high-seas adventures, MGM+ now offers all four seasons of Black Sails, a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. Set twenty years before the events of the classic novel, the series follows the infamous Captain Flint during the golden age of piracy in the Caribbean.
It’s important to note that, unlike its US counterpart, MGM+ in the UK is only accessible through a Prime Video Channel subscription, requiring an active Amazon Prime or Prime Video membership.
However, priced at £4.49/month in addition to the Prime Video subscription fee, MGM+ is now cheaper than the late Lionsgate+, which used to cost £5.99/month.
