Discovery+ has announced a new pricing offer for its Standard tier subscription, just in time for its upcoming coverage of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
From July 17 to August 11, new and returning subscribers can access the Standard tier (which includes Eurosport and the Olympics coverage) for £3.99/month, a reduction from the usual £6.99 monthly fee.
The discounted rate will remain in effect until December 2024, after which subscriptions will automatically renew at £6.99 per month.
As always, there are a few caveats – so see more details below.
Olympic Coverage Plans
As the streaming home of Eurosport in the UK, Discovery+ is set to provide extensive coverage of the Paris Olympics, which begin on July 26.
The platform plans to offer 3,800 live hours of Olympic content, covering all 329 medal events across the 32 Olympic sports.
Features of the coverage will include multi-feed audio with up to 20 language options, in-play discovery for navigation between live events, and gold medal alerts.
A dedicated Team GB Hub will also be available, featuring live and catch-up content.
The broadcaster has assembled a team of over 100 former Olympians to provide analysis and commentary, including UK athletes such as diver Tom Daley, cyclist Laura Kenny, and rower James Cracknell.
Discovery+ Subscription Tiers and Availability
Discovery+ is a streaming service that offers a wide range of content, including documentaries, lifestyle programming, and sports.
The platform serves as the streaming home for various channels under the Warner Bros. Discovery umbrella, including Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, and Eurosport.
The service currently offers three subscription tiers:
1. Basic (£3.99/month or £39.99/year): Includes lifestyle and factual content
2. Standard (usually £6.99/month, temporarily £3.99/month): Adds Eurosport, including Olympic coverage
3. Premium (£30.99/month): Also includes TNT Sports
While the Premium tier offers additional sports content through TNT Sports (formerly BT Sport), it’s not necessary for the Olympic coverage.
The Standard tier, which includes Eurosport, will provide full access to all Olympic events.
The Discovery+ dedicated app is available on most smart TVs and streaming devices sold in the UK, including Amazon’s Fire TV, Roku, and Sky Stream.
Additionally, Discovery+ is available as a separate channel on Amazon Prime Video, allowing subscribers to watch via the Prime Video app.
For traditional TV viewers, Eurosport’s linear channels (Eurosport 1 and 2) will broadcast Olympic coverage. These channels are available to Sky, Virgin Media, and EE TV subscribers with appropriate sports packages.
It’s worth noting that Sky TV subscribers can currently also access the Discovery+ Standard subscription at no extra cost as part of their existing package.
This means Sky customers will have full access to Olympic coverage without needing to pay for an additional subscription.
The Olympic Discount Deal
This week, Discovery+ has introduced a special discount for its Standard tier:
– Price: £3.99 per month (reduced from £6.99)
– Availability period: July 17 to August 11, 2024
– Duration of discounted price: Until December 2024 (Up to 6 months in total – but you can cancel at any point)
– Content included: All Discovery+ Standard tier content, including full Olympic coverage via Eurosport
The discounted price is available through two main avenues:
It’s important to note that these two subscription methods are not interchangeable.
If you sign up through the Discovery+ app or website, you’ll need to use their platform to watch. Similarly, if you subscribe via Amazon’s Prime Video Channels, you’ll access the content through the Prime Video app.
Potential subscribers should be aware of several caveats:
1. The offer is for new and returning customers only. Existing subscribers cannot switch to this discounted rate.
2. After December 2024, the price will automatically increase to the regular rate of £6.99 per month starting January 2025. To avoid the price increase, subscribers must cancel their subscription before the renewal date in January 2025.
3. The discounted rate does not apply to the Premium tier, which includes TNT Sports.
