Amazon’s Fire TV Christmas Sale: Firestick Prices Slashed

Missed out on the Black Friday Fire TV deals? Good news – Amazon has brought back nearly all of its November discounts this week, making this a solid opportunity to pick up a streaming stick as a last-minute Christmas gift (or, you know, as a treat for yourself).

The deals are nearly identical to what we saw during Black Friday, with the Fire TV Stick 4K Select back down to £19.99 and the Fire TV Stick 4K at £24.99.

Both offer impressive value, but the 4K Select in particular has a few caveats you should be aware of (see below).

There are a couple of differences from November’s sale, though. The Alexa Voice Remote Pro is slightly more expensive this time, and the Fire TV Soundbar Plus isn’t discounted at all for now.

It’s possible we’ll see further reductions on Boxing Day – the Remote Pro might drop back to its Black Friday price, and the Soundbar Plus will likely get a discount again.

But the 4K Select and standard 4K stick are unlikely to go any lower than they already are (or else Amazon might as well give them away). For now, the discounts are set to run until December 31 – or until the promotional stock runs out.

Here’s what’s currently on offer.

Fire TV Stick 4K Select – £19.99 (Was £49.99)

Amazon’s newest streaming device is back to its Black Friday price of £19.99 – a 60% (!) discount on a device that only launched in mid-October.

At this price, Amazon is barely covering manufacturing costs. So why the aggressive discounting on a device that’s only two months old?

The Select is the first Fire TV stick to run Amazon’s brand new Vega operating system, built directly on Linux rather than Android.

Because it’s a completely different platform, every app needs to be rebuilt from scratch to work on it – and that creates a chicken-and-egg problem.

Developers won’t invest time and resources building Vega OS apps unless there’s a big enough user base to justify the expense, but customers won’t buy a device with limited app availability.

Amazon’s solution appears to be making the Select so cheap that people buy it anyway, hoping a rapidly growing userbase will convince developers to prioritise the platform.

The Select supports around 900 apps compared to over 30,000 on the Android-based Fire TV sticks.

That said, all the major UK streaming services are available – BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, 5, NOW, Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video – so most people will find what they need. But less mainstream apps might be missing.

One piece of good news: VPN support finally arrived at the end of November. NordVPN and IPVanish are now both available on the Select, after nearly two months of waiting following launch.

If you’d been holding off because of the missing VPN support, that’s no longer an issue.

But the Select still doesn’t support sideloading (and likely never will) – you can only install apps from the Amazon Appstore, full stop.

For most people who stick to mainstream streaming services, this won’t matter. But if you’ve ever sideloaded alternative apps or media players, the Select isn’t for you.

Other limitations compared to the standard 4K stick include no Dolby Vision (only HDR10+), WiFi 5 instead of WiFi 6, and 1GB of RAM instead of 2GB (see my full Fire TV 4K Select review).

At £19.99, though, those trade-offs become much more palatable – especially for a second or third streaming stick for a bedroom or kitchen TV where you’ll only use mainstream services.

As before, there’s another discount – trade in any old Fire TV device and get 20% off your new purchase, plus a £3-£6 gift card (depending on the device you’re trading in). That brings the Select down to £15.99 if you’ve got an ancient Fire TV stick gathering dust in a drawer somewhere, plus the gift card.

The trade-in programme isn’t just for Select, though – you can also use it for the standard 4K stick, or any of the other Fire TV models.

Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen) – £24.99 (Was £59.99)

The standard Fire TV Stick 4K is back to £24.99 – matching the lowest price we saw during Black Friday.

For most people, this remains the Fire TV stick to buy. At just £5 more than the Select, you get Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support, WiFi 6, double the RAM (2GB instead of 1GB), access to over 30,000 apps, VPN support, and the ability to sideload legitimate apps if needed.

That £5 difference buys you a significantly more capable device with none of the question marks around app availability that come with the Select’s new operating system.

If you’re buying a Fire TV device as your main streaming stick for a 4K television, this is the one to get at these prices.

Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen) – £39.99 (Was £69.99)

The flagship Fire TV stick is back to £39.99, matching its Black Friday price.

The Max gives you the fastest processor in the range, WiFi 6E support (the newest WiFi standard), 16GB of storage instead of 8GB, and 2GB of RAM. You also get the Enhanced Alexa Voice Remote with its handy Recent and Settings buttons – neither of which come with the other sticks.

For anyone who wants the absolute best streaming stick experience, this is it. The extra £15 over the standard 4K stick gets you noticeably snappier performance and future-proofed connectivity.

That said, the standard 4K stick at £24.99 is the better value right now, and most people won’t notice the difference in everyday use. The Max is for enthusiasts who want the best – but it’s not essential.

Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen) – £109.99 (Was £139.99)

The premium Fire TV Cube is also back to its Black Friday price of £109.99.

The Cube combines high-end streaming capabilities with Echo speaker functionality and hands-free Alexa control.

It’s the most powerful Fire TV device you can buy, with a faster processor than even the 4K Max, plus an HDMI input that lets you control your cable box or games console through Alexa.

It’s worth noting the Cube launched back in 2022, so it’s getting a bit long in the tooth. At £109.99 it’s decent value if you specifically want the Echo integration and hands-free control, but for pure streaming the 4K Max at £39.99 delivers most of the performance at a fraction of the price.

Alexa Voice Remote Pro – £24.99 (Was £34.99)

The premium Alexa Voice Remote Pro is discounted to £24.99 – though that’s £5 more than the £19.99 it hit during Black Friday.

The Remote Pro adds several features that aren’t available on the standard remotes: backlit buttons for watching in the dark, a remote finder that helps you locate it when it’s lost down the sofa, and two programmable preset buttons you can customise for your favourite apps or channels.

It works with any Fire TV device, so if you’ve already got a Fire TV stick and want to upgrade your remote experience, it’s worth considering.

At £24.99 it’s reasonable value – though if you’re not in a rush, it might drop back to £19.99 on Boxing Day.

What’s Not On Sale

The Fire TV Stick HD remains at full price – £39.99. During Black Friday it wasn’t discounted either, which suggests Amazon is deliberately positioning the Select as the budget option.

Even at the new discounted price, at £19.99, you’re probably better off getting the Select stick as this point, or the classic 4K Stick for £5 extra, even if you don’t have a 4K TV (as the 4K sticks will still work on non-4K TVs with an HDMI port, they’ll just not show anything in 4K, obviously).

The Fire TV Soundbar Plus isn’t discounted this time around. During Black Friday it dropped to £149.99 from £249.99, which was excellent value for a soundbar that punches well above its weight.

If you’re after the Soundbar Plus, it’s probably worth waiting for Boxing Day – there’s a good chance it’ll be discounted again.

Bottom Line: Which Fire TV Should You Buy?

For most people, the Fire TV Stick 4K at £24.99 is the best choice. It’s excellent value for proper 4K streaming with Dolby Vision, WiFi 6, 2GB RAM, full app support, and no questions about compatibility.

If you want the best performance, the Fire TV Stick 4K Max at £39.99 delivers faster speeds and WiFi 6E. It’s not essential, but enthusiasts will appreciate the upgrade.

If you’re on a very tight budget or buying a second stick for a bedroom TV, the Select at £19.99 is now easier to recommend than it was at launch – especially with VPN support finally available.

Just understand that you’re buying into a new platform with a smaller app selection and no sideloading.
